Disposable vape alternatives: what to switch to in the UK

Disposables are off the shelves, but the replacements cost less to run and keep the flavours you know. Here is how to choose.

Refillable vape pods and pod kits, the main alternatives to disposable vapes

The best disposable vape alternatives are refillable pod kits filled with 20mg nic salt, and prefilled pod kits with replaceable pods. Both give the same feel and flavours as a disposable. A refillable pod kit costs a little more up front, but bottles of nic salt from £2.39 make it far cheaper to run. Prefilled kits are the simplest swap if you want no filling at all.

Why you need an alternative

Single-use vapes have been banned from sale across the UK since 1 June 2025. Government guidance says a vape only counts as reusable if it has a rechargeable battery, a refillable or replaceable pod, tank or cartridge, and a replaceable coil where it has one. Anything else is single-use and cannot be sold. Our UK vape rules guide covers the ban and what else has changed.

Your two options

If you want something as simple as a disposable, prefilled pod kits work the same way but let you replace only the pod.

Refillable vape vs disposable

If you are looking for the best refillable vape in the UK, start with what changes. A refillable vape keeps the parts that wear out (the pod and coil) separate from the battery, so you replace small parts rather than a whole device. You also choose your liquid, which means the flavour you liked in a disposable is still available as a bottle. Elf Bar flavours live on as Elfliq, Elux Legend flavours as Elux Legend nic salts, and Bar Juice 5000 was built around the same disposable favourites.

The trade-off is a few minutes of upkeep: filling the pod and changing it every so often. Our guide on how to refill a vape pod shows how quick it is, and how to prime a coil stops the burnt hit new users sometimes get.

Best pod kit for nic salts: what to look for

You do not need anything fancy. For nic salts, these features matter more than the brand on the box:

  • Mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw: a tighter draw like a cigarette or a disposable.
  • Coil resistance around 0.8 to 1.2 ohms: low power, cool vapour, right for 10mg to 20mg salts.
  • A refillable 2ml pod: the UK limit for a tank or pod with nicotine.
  • Draw activation or a single button: as easy as a disposable.
  • USB-C charging and a battery that lasts a day for your use.
  • Replaceable coils or cheap replacement pods, so you are not buying a new device.

Avoid putting 10mg or 20mg nic salt into a high-powered sub-ohm kit. Those are built for low-strength freebase liquid and big clouds.

Which nic salt to put in it

Match your old disposable. If you used Elf Bars, start with Elfliq, such as Elfliq Blueberry Sour Raspberry. If you used Elux, try Elux Legend Tiger Blood. For the cheapest bottle, Bar Juice 5000 Blue Razz Lemonade was £2.39 at the cheaper store we track (prices checked 2 November 2026). Our best nic salts UK guide compares the ranges in detail.

Most disposables were 20mg, so start there and step down later if you want to. The strength guide explains how.

What switching costs

Here is a worked example using real bottle prices. Every vaper uses a different amount, so treat it as illustration rather than a promise. If you get through one 10ml bottle every four days, that is about seven or eight bottles a month. At £2.39 a bottle (Bar Juice 5000 at the cheaper store we track, 2 November 2026) that is roughly £17 to £19 a month on liquid, plus a pod or coil now and then. To work out your own usage, see how long a 10ml nic salt lasts.

Prefilled pod kits: what to know

Prefilled kits look and feel closest to a disposable. The battery is rechargeable and the flavour comes in a sealed pod that clicks in. The catch is choice and cost: you can only use the pods made for that device, and each replacement pod costs more per ml than bottled nic salt. They are a good first step if you want no filling at all, and many people move to a refillable pod later once they are used to charging a device.

Looking after your new kit

A rechargeable device needs the habits a disposable never did: charge it with a decent USB-C cable, do not leave it charging overnight, and recycle old devices properly. Our vape battery safety guide covers the basics, and if you are flying, check whether you can take a vape on a plane.

Questions readers ask

What is the best alternative to a disposable vape?

A refillable pod kit with 20mg nic salt for the lowest running cost, or a prefilled pod kit if you want to avoid filling. Both keep the feel of a disposable.

Are disposable vape alternatives legal in the UK?

Yes. Rechargeable, refillable devices with replaceable pods or coils are legal. Only single-use vapes were banned, from 1 June 2025.

Are refillable vapes cheaper than disposables?

To run, yes. After the device, you only buy 10ml bottles of nic salt, from £2.39 at the cheaper store we track, plus an occasional pod or coil.

What strength should I use after a disposable?

Most disposables were 20mg nic salt, so start on 20mg in a pod kit and step down later if you want to.

Can I get my old disposable flavour in a bottle?

Usually. Elfliq bottles Elf Bar flavours, Elux Legend nic salts bottle Elux Legend flavours, and Bar Juice 5000 covers the same disposable favourites.

Do I need to change coils on a disposable alternative?

On a refillable pod kit, yes, every so often: either a replaceable coil or the whole pod, depending on the device. On a prefilled kit you just swap the pod.
